ArrowCat arrives in South Africa
Infamous for it's rough water and demanding conditions, Cape Town, South Africa is home to numerous catamaran builders and countless custom catamarans. Boaters worldwide recognize the prevalence of catamarans in this market, where they are used primarily for fishing (both commercial and recreational) and increasingly as pleasure cruisers. The word "catamaran" is synonymous with "boating" in this arena.
As a seasoned boat builder and owner of Capetown's largest Yamaha outboard dealership, it was with great pleasure that we demonstrated the ArrowCat 30 to Ernie Magson (owner, Magson Marine), at Australia's Sanctuary Cove Boat show, this spring. "With it's New Zealand design, I wanted to personally test it in Australia and the ArrowCat 30 seemed a natural for our South African market", says Ernie, who had first seen the ArrowCat 30 at a show in Auckland NZ, 2 years ago. While it was mutually admired at the time, his business was directed squarely at the fishing market, with no compromises.
As business carried on, Magson noticed the increasing pleasure boat market (noting it was devoid of the "necessary" catamaran influence) and saw that his buyers were ready for an evolution. The plan was to combine a proven offshore hull with an upscale cruiser; featuring amenity and overnighting features, but could still fish 80 miles offshore.
After a bit of homework and several "intriguing" conversations- after all, why would one of South Africa's oldest catamaran builders be looking to ArrowCat to fill their catamaran need? After meeting Ernie at the Sanctuary Cove show, the answer turned out to be almost too simple; "You obviously know how to build a good boat, I don't see that we would do it any different. Why wouldn't we work together?" was Ernie's reply.
A week later, the boat was spec'd as a custom build to allow Magson Marines fishing team to rig the boat "properly" for the local market. A week after delivery, the newly delivered ArrowCat 30 entered it's first boatshow and found a warm reception. Now, 3 months later, and with a 3rd boat being built, ArrowCat is proud to find it's place at the top of the worlds catamaran markets.
